AIKIDO

AIKIDO which literally means "The Way of Harmony" is a form of self-defense that emphasizes wrist, elbow and shoulder locks, all of which are powerful and painful, coupled with training in the use of sword, staff and knife techniques. Unlike other martial arts which focuses on striking hard, Aikido's principle of harmony is focused on flowing with your opponent and using their own momentum and strength back against them. Because of this, size, weight, age and physical strength play only a small role in Aikido, also making it a uniquely suited option for women, children and older students.

Morihei Ueshiba(1882-1969), is the founder of Aikido and his goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attackers from severe injury. Ueshiba developed Aikido primarily during the late 1920s through the 1930s through the synthesis of the older martial arts that he had studied. The core martial art from which Aikido derives is Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, which Ueshiba studied directly with Takeda Sōkaku. Due to its emphasis on practical efficiency, it is the style used to train women and anti-riot teams of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. Aikido gained massive popularity in the 1980's and 1990's mainly through Hollywood Action movie star Steven Seagal who used Aikido in almost all his films.

Today, Aikido is not only a popular martial arts for adults, it has gained tremendous popularity with children because its techniques focus on disabling opponents who are bigger and stronger than them - making it ideal for children. This makes it a highly practical art of self defense for your children.
